Hello, wonderful humans! I trust you’re having an exciting Black Friday full of glorious deals 🙋🏽
In the spirit of celebration, today’s post is about all the awesome things that have happened for women around the world. What you focus on multiplies, so let’s get right into that.
Margaret Hamilton awarded for her work for Apollo moon mission
The scientist was awarded a Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama at this week’s ceremony. Her software writing for the mission was critical to its success, and she finally received the highest recognition for it (www.bbc.com). As an Engineering student and lover of physics, anything to do with space gets my engine running (no pun intended). So this woman was and is such an inspiration to me. Obama’s words really spoke to me: he stated that she “symbolizes that generation of unsung women who helped send humankind into space”. I am keeping my focus on a world where women are celebrated for their contributions, their intelligence, their humor, and everything else about them that makes them as valuable as they are. YES! Shine, Margaret! May you become a household name and inspire more little girls who love science.
2. Forever New South Africa casts dark-skinned model for latest campaign
According to Essence, less than 10% of mainstream models are black. I didn’t need to look that up to know it, though! And even within the black community, light-skinned women are usually the only ones seen as beautiful. HOWEVER I’ve seen many dark-skinned black models come up this year, and Adut Akech Bior is one of them!
To make it on such a big brand is such an inspiration, and really makes women of colour everywhere so happy. THANK YOU! And well done, girl! There are no limits. The current stats are the past. We now know you longer have to be a certain race or shade to be a successful model.
3. Secret Deodorant advert sends a beautiful message
The brand Secret recently released an advert that made such a powerful statement. The scene is a women’s bathroom, and a trans woman is afraid to walk our of her cubicle and face the cisgender women by the mirrors. I’d recommend you watch the advert here.
The message they end with is:
“There is no right way to be a woman.”
This is such a wonderful breakthrough for the trans community. As far as I know, they are hardly represented in the media, and if so, usually as a joke. To send a message so beautiful and also universal, was just such an amazing step to take to accepting people of all genders. I was so happy to see this. Goosebumps!
So, there we have it- a celebration of awesome things happening around the world. Sometimes I lose hope, but it’s awesome to be reminded that we have made amazing leaps forward as humanity, and I believe that we have the power to shape the society of tomorrow. We’ve got all the power, right here inside ourselves.
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend
Much love, A
